I'm Just a City Girl

It was spring semester of my junior year in college and I was without a summer internship. With pressure from school and the search for a perfect internship, my stress was at an all-time high. Until one of my professors came to the rescue; he introduced me to his friend Pete Marsnik. Pete just so happened to be the CEO of Northland Buildings and was looking for a summer intern. Two interviews later I was offered a position as the company’s Marketing Intern which I gladly accepted.

When I first began I thought to myself I’m just a city girl, what do I know about construction?

It didn’t take me long to figure out there is a lot more to this business! I find myself impressed everyday by the detail that goes into these buildings. I had always pictured post-frame buildings to be a basic rectangular pole barn like the one my grandparents have at our cabin. Boy was I wrong!

During my first interview, Pete explained how post-frame construction can be used for a variety of building types. When he told me the building we were standing in was post-frame, I couldn’t believe it. It was an office building with carpet, desks, a kitchen, and pictures on the walls, everything you would expect in an office setting. It was definitely not your “typical pole barn”.

One of my duties as an intern is taking care of the company Facebook, so I am constantly looking through pictures to add to the page. It’s crazy to me how individual each building is; none of them look exactly alike. I would have never thought I would have a favorite pole barn, but I do- several of them!

Not only am I impressed by the buildings, but I am also impressed by the people. Everyone has been so warm and welcoming to me. Yes I get a hard time for being a Minnesotan from time to time, and I get poked at for being from the city but it’s all in good fun. One of my favorites was driving to Farm Technology Days when Pete asked me, “Hey Amber, do you see those round hay bales out in that field? Did you know they outlawed those in Minnesota?”

Of course I believed him and responded, “Really? Why?”

“They said the cows couldn’t get a square meal!” Cheesy yes but I fell for it and everyone got a good laugh!

Needless to say going in to work is never too difficult. Everyone knows how to have a good time while still getting work done which in my eyes is what makes this company a success.

Who would have thought a city girl like me would be working for a post-frame construction company and loving every minute of it! I know I wouldn’t have!
